Poster Symposium Prize Winners

The symposium is an annual research communication competition. The exercise develops academic, presentation and research communication skills and supports the development of research students' capacity to effectively explain their research.
The event provides students with an opportunity similar to that experienced in a conference setting and is adapted to each year level.

IONS-KOALA 2014 Student Conference

From 23-28 November, the IONS-KOALA 2014 student conference was held at the University of Adelaide.  A large number of attendees were addressed by visiting plenary speakers from around the world.

The main goal of KOALA is to facilitate discussion and networking between students in different research fields of optics who otherwise would be unlikely to meet.

Congratulations to the stellar efforts of the coordinators including Chemistry and Physics PhD students Patrick Tapping, Ka Wu, Sophie Hollitt and Jonathan Hall who the Dean in his commendation stated

I am writing to thank you for your organisational role and your time and effort in assisting with the recent KOALA conference.

This not only reflects very well on the School and the Faculty, but is also great experience for you to have for the future.

People who commit themselves to assisting with such events are of great value to their organisations and this does not go unnoticed. Working for the whole group is an admirable quality that you have demonstrated very clearly

Congratulations

congratulations

Congratulations to A/Prof Heike Ebendorff-Heidepriem and Dr Jiangbo (Tim) Zhao  for the being awarded funding under the 2015-2016 Group of Eight Australia – Germany Joint Research Co-operation Scheme for the project “Incorporating Pd nanoparticles into fibre for plasmon-enhanced UV-blue photonic devices”

This scheme is a joint initiative of the Go8 and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Germany's national agency for the support of international academic co-operation. More information about the Scheme.

congratulations Congratulations to  Dr Jiangbo (Tim) Zhao and Dr Erik Schartner who were both successful in their applications to the Australian Academy of Science’s National Committee for Physics to attend the 7th HOPE Meeting with Nobel Laureates in Japan, 1-5 March 2015 in Tokyo.

A Perfect Measure to Success

congratulationsCongratulations to Dr Stephen Warren-Smith for winning the new University of Adelaide Faculty of Sciences Daniel Walker Medal awarded annually to the best Early Career Researcher in the Faculty.

Stephen will be missed as he left the School on 12 December to take up his Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship for two years at the Institute for Photonic Technology in Jena, Germany.

Speciation of copper in a range of food types by X-ray absorption spectroscopy

QX-ray Absorption Spectroscopy was used to determine the chemical forms of copper (Cu) in a range of foods that would make significant contributions to total Cu intake in a standard diet. Both Cu(I) and Cu(II) forms were identified in at least five different coordination environments. This research suggested that the absorption of dietary Cu could vary dependent on the types of foods consumed and the different bioavailability of the species they contain.
